Marshall "Major" Taylor was a world cycling champion in 1900. Setting record
breaking world speed records, he was the first African-American to become the
premier sports figure in a major American popular sport. His story is told in his
1928 autobiography, "The Fastest Bicycle Rider in the World" (Ayer's Books, New
Hampshire), and in a 1988 biography, "Major Taylor, the Extraordinary Career of
a Champion Bicycle Racer", by Andrew Ritchie (Bicycle Books, San Francisco).
